a. OHAs and Non Insulin Injectables


Upon successful completion of this continuing education lesson, you will be better able to:

1. Counsel a patient on each of the different classes of anti-hyperglyaemics used in type 2 diabetes:

a. Biguanides

b. Alpha-glucosidase inhibitors

c. Insulin secretagogues

d. Thiazolidinediones(TZDs)

e. Dipeptidylpeptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors

f. Glucagon-like-peptide 1 (GLP-1) analogs

g. SGLT2 inhibitors

2. Educate patients on the efficacy, adverse effects and precautions with each anti- hyperglycaemic class.

3. Discuss the role of combination therapy in the management of type 2 diabetes.

4. Counsel a patient on the different insulin regimen most commonly used in patients with type 2 diabetes.

5. Provide patients taking insulin therapy with different tips and suggestions to improve administration and reduce common issues with insulin use.


b. Intensive Insulin Therapy

Upon successful completion of this continuing education lesson, you will be better able to:

1. ADA clinical practice guideline recommendations for insulin therapy in patients with type 1 diabetes.

2. Advantages and disadvantages of Basal/Bolus and continuous subcutaneous insulin injection (CSII) regimens in patients with type 1 diabetes.

3. The roles of the different insulin types used in both the CSII therapy and basal/bolus therapy.

4. Insulin initiation and the role of carbohydrate counting in patient with type 1 diabetes.


The key clinical points regarding basal/bolus injections of insulin therapy and continuous subcutaneous insulin injection therapy in patients with type 1 diabetes.
